Shi-xu (2005). A Cultural Approach to Discourse. Houndmills, England/New York: Palgrave Macmillan.

Drawing on wide cultural knowledge and experience, Shi-xu critiques aculturalism in discourse analysis in terms of the discipline's Western orientation, domination and whiteness. He advocates instead a culturally more pluralist approach that constructs discourse theory and methodology from the innovative position in-between the Eastern and Western cultures. He also suggests a set of practical strategies for discourse research, which he illustrates with studies of culturally wide-ranging texts, sending out a call to those who wish to look beyond their familiar traditions for a mode of research that is relevant to contemporary global realities. "This is an inspiriting and inspirited collection of papers...This is a timely and truly pragmatic study...It moves purposefully beyond mere description of the problem to promote a hands-on approach for fighting against the ravages of Western hegemony and universalism...Bravo!" Shi-xu (1997). Cultural Representations: Analyzing the discourse about the Other. New York/Frankfurt: Peter Lang.

This book straddles the fields of discourse analysis, discursive psychology and cultural studies. It offers fresh concepts and methods of studying cultural representations. Through textual and ethnographic analyses of interviews with Chinese expatriate academics in the Netherlands on the one hand and Dutch travel accounts of China on the other, it reveals significant differences in the discursive strategies and cultural-political functions in their representations of cultural 'others'.

''This volume opens up new and innovative perspectives for all interested in discourse analysis, cross-cultural communication and social change. It links and relates approaches which originate more in the 'West' with those stemming from the 'East'. Thus, a challenging debate is finally made possible which ultimately could and should lead to more collaborative research and, even more importantly, to better and mutual understandign.''

DISCOURSE STUDIES II
Tuesday 14hrs, Eastern Blk 6, #401

In Discourse Studies I of the autumn quarter, we examined cultural-philosophical, western and Chinese theoretical approaches to discourse. Our central claim was that, from a multiculturalist perspective, discourse is a site of cultural contest and change (see also Shi-xu 2005, A Cultural Approach to Discourse, Houndmills, England: Macmillan; Shi-xu, ed, Discourse as Cultural Struggle, Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press).

In this part of Discourse Studies, Part II, we engage in a set of practical empirical research projects. The purpose is 1) to develop critical skills in designing and using discourse research methods and 2) to acquire a real practical experience in discourse research and accomplish a specific investigation. We try to achieve these objectives mainly by reading in and discussing methods in discourse studies on the one hand and on the other hand working through particular research projects in groups. The assessment method is group-papers.

Multilingualism in China
Xixi Campus, Tian Jiabin Building 406B

With the accelerated globalisation and economic reform, the linguistic landscape of contemporary Chinese Mainland has changed. Alongside the national standard language (putonghua), local dialects appear to revive in the media and arts. English has become even more widespread in Mainland China in education and science as well as everyday life. At the same time, questions have been raised about the future development of the linguistic landscape and the national policy about it.

In this course we shall have a first look at the general theories of multilingualism (including bilingualism) on the one hand and on the other hand examine a few particular Chinese situations (e.g. multilingual development of children, teaching in English at the university level, dialect use in the media). The purpose is to understand the importance and advantages of being multilingual and strategies for teaching and learning towards multilingualism.
